I feel kind of sad writing this but, after 25 years of the longest running comic book series, Archie comics and Sega have parted ways. And the Sonic comic book series published by Archie is cancelled. A bittersweet ending to a great run of a comic series loaded with great storytelling. We all should've seen this coming I believe, since there was a big lack of communication between the two companies; and Archie coming up with a new series that replaced Sonic. But, it seems as if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As Sega basically claims to be looking for another publisher to continue Sonic The Hedgehog comics. Which is a good thing, since the comic series were a huge seller, and probably Archie's biggest asset. I have followed the Sonic comics since before I was a teenager, and felt like part of my childhood was dying. But I'm going to remain optimistic and hope for the best, whatever Sega has planned for Sonic comic books, I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Today is Sonic The Hedgehog's 26th Birthday! And as part of celebrating, I thought I would share a bit of my history with the franchise, my rediscovered love for it, and thoughts on the future.

From the time when I was just a little squirt, I LOVED the Sonic series. My history with Sonic goes back as far as the Sega Dreamcast days. I'll never forget Christmas season of 1999 when my dad and older brother went in on buying a Dreamcast console that year. I hear stories about my brother having a Genesis and playing the crap out of the Sonic titles on that system. So when the Dreamcast came out, we were all over that. Sonic Adventure was the game that introduced me to the series and the Blue Blur hedgehog with an attitude. I was hooked. I loved how fast and smooth the gameplay was, the characters themselves, and of course the music composed by Jun Senoue and Crush 40 was fantastic. Later on I got Sonic Shuffle as a 6th birthday present in 2000. Didn't finish the entire game, but I actually still enjoyed it. It wasn't until the next year with Sega's final days as a hardware distributor that I would play Sonic Adventure 2 Christmas season 2001; and is what solidified myself as a Sonic fan. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow quickly and easily became my favorite characters, and Luckily, just before my father traded our Dreamcast in for the new Xbox at the time, I was able to beat SA2 to completion; Sonic and Shadow in their Super forms stopping the Space Colony Ark from crashing on Earth while rocking out to Crush 40's "Live & Learn" is a thing of legend to this day. I had the handheld games like Sonic Battle, Advance 1 and 2, and even though I never beat those ones until way later and still liked them a lot. Around 2005-2006, I got the Sonic Mega Collection, Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Riders. I had only finished Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and beat Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, and Shadow The Hedgehog. I was anticipating Sonic The Hedgehog '06 and visiting the now defunct Sonic Central website everyday looking for new info. When I finally got the game that Christmas with an Xbox 360 and 100%ed it, at the time I was playing through the game, I didn't think much of what was wrong. But that quickly changed. While there were some aspects of the gameplay in Sonic and Shadow's stages I liked, other parts reminded me of why I loathed and hated most of Sonic '06. Not just because of the story not making any sense, but the glitches and bugs, load times, stupid and I mean STUPID and monotonous town missions, and hub worlds where it was so easy to get lost. And only for everything to be retconned at the end. It sure borrowed from Sonic Adventure 1's formula, but SA1 got it right. Sonic '06 didn't do that. Sonic '06 physically gave me headaches at times; that's how bad it was to me. Afterwards Sonic & The Secret Rings came out, and I begged my dad to get me a Wii with that game during that summer of 2007; never happened. I got Sonic Unleashed at Christmas of 2008, and never got passed the China stage. I missed out on all Nintendo DS Sonic games, as well the Wii titles 'cause I didn't own those consoles and was still too young to have a job a the time, causing me to also miss out on Sonic & The Black Knight, and Sonic Colors. My Xbox system had died from use, and my dad wasn't going to get another one, and I wasn't using my Gameboy Advance much anymore, so I had to let go of all Sonic games I had. It wasn't long before I realized I was falling out of the Sonic fandom. The thing I always said at that point was "I Opened My Heart, now my heart is being broken." I had no reason to get excited for any new Sonic games because for startes, they were coming out on a console I didn't have at the time, since Sega had landed a deal with Nintendo to grant them several years worth of Nintendo-exclusive Sonic games. And because of that with my inability to get a Wii for myself I fell into disillusion and just felt I was growing out of Sonic. And I was hearing so many negative things about the later games, even Sonic Lost World on 3DS didn't appeal to me. It was however, in 2014 thanks to me grabbing Sonic Generations late on my first few paychecks at my first job, that I was reminded of how much fun I had with the series. I then thought to myself, "Wow. I used to love Sonic." Running through stages of all the great games I played as a kid in Generations, like Chemical Plant Zone, Speed Highway, City Escape, Seaside Hill, and Rooftop Run.  I watched all the Sonic cartoons DAILY; with Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic X being my favorites. I read the Archie Sonic comic books growing up from when I was 10. I watched the fan-made animations like Sonic Shorts on YouTube, and Sonic Nazo Unleashed on Newgrounds. I collected CD soundtracks, action figures, and wore t shirts. I thought "How could I just abandon something that was such a huge part of my life?" And it was because of that one game that was when I rediscovered the love I had for Sonic The Hedgehog. I was hearing of the Sonic Boom spinoff series that was getting a cartoon and 2 games. The cartoon being okay at best, and the games were critically panned. I was like "Oh boy, what has Sega done this time?" But, I ignored it. I didn't have and still don't have a Wii U, so I wasn't buying Boom Rise Of Lyric; but I did buy a New Nintendo 3DS XL with the handheld version of Sonic Generations, and Sonic Lost World. The games weren't as good as I thought they would be, but they weren't half bad. I then went back and completed the other Classic era Sonic games I never finished. Sonic CD and 3 & Knuckles being my favorites. Around the last couple of years I finally beat Sonic Unleashed on my PS3, and later got Sonic Rush, and Black Knight and Colors on my Wii I later bought, and absolutely loved what I played through.

What do I think of the future? Well, I'm very optimistic. Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces are looking like very exciting and promising games. There's still plans of a live-action/CGI hybrid Sonic movie that's been delayed until 2019. If you ask me, I'd say the future looks bright for the Blue Blur. And I'm more than happy to stick around with him and his friends until the very end. So Happy 26th Birthday Sonic! Keep on running and being way past cool! And here's to many more! Sonic fans unite and rejoice! We are the Sonic Youth!

Also, here are a couple trailers for both games as part of this journal:

So I officially turned 23 years old yesterday, and I of course feel great about that. And my life has still been kind of rocky at times, though slowly but surely I'm confident that things will start to get better. My life has still been very busy with work and other things, and I'm still trying to make a daily balanced schedule to stick by. I still do intend to make that new content I mentioned some time ago as well, but I just need more time. Also I am thinking of changing my username again; though I have some ideas I haven't decided yet on which it will be. I am going to make the change soon though so be on the lookout. That is all, and take care everyone. By the way, I really wish deviantART would bring back those webcam features, I enjoyed using that.

So this is the first ever Sonic journal I've made in the 5 years I have been a member of deviantART. And I feel the time is now to finally share my thoughts about Sega's iconic mascot and one of my favorite childhood game characters. 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of everyone's favorite blue blur, Sonic The Hedgehog. 25 years going strong full of ups and downs, some great games, and some not so great ones. With many comic book issues, 5 cartoon TV series, a 1999 OVA, and a live-action CGI hybrid movie slated to release in 2018. But the upcoming year is what has peaked the interest of all Sonic fans alike (myself included). With two big games coming out the first one is Sonic Mania which is confirmed as a multiplatform sometime in the Spring 2017 release, going back to Sonic's 2D platforming roots in the Sega Genesis with Tails and Knuckles being playable characters; and being developed by Christian Whitehead who brought forth very awesome mobile phone and PS3/X360 ports of the Genesis classics and Sonic CD. Which is bringing a mix of stages we know, with new ones as well; along with new gameplay mechanics. And the next being an unnamed title at this time Sonic Project 2017 that's coming out for the Holiday season next year, this one being made by the same people who were behind Sonic Colors and Generations. Both games featuring the classic Genesis Sonic and looking phenomenal. The other interesting thing is Project 2017 has been confirmed that it's not a Sonic Adventure 3 or even a Generations 2, but something completely new. But I'm guessing by the tagline "Join the resistance." is indicating this game could possibly have ties to the popular Archie Sonic comic book series; so the "resistance" could refer to the Freedom Fighters from those comics. And by the looks of it you gotta wonder; has Dr.Eggman actually won and taken over this time? It does look pretty dark to say the least. There's much speculation of course for the Project 2017 game since very little was teased at the Comic Con anniversary party in July; but what's on my personal wish list is there's multiple playable characters like Sonic Heroes and '06 (I would love to play as Knuckles and Shadow again), Jun Senoue works on the soundtrack and Crush 40 comes back to do a main theme song again, either we get Ryan Drummond or Jason Griffith as the voice of modern Sonic back, and most importantly Sega and Sonic Team takes their time, and doesn't repeat the mistakes with Sonic '06 and Boom by rushing it. I honestly cannot explain my excitement level right now, as I'm going through all the games in my library, including the soon coming Sonic Boom Fire & Ice to hold me over for now. And after receiving mixed opinions with Sonic Lost World, coupled with the recent plummeting of Sonic's reputation with Boom Rise Of Lyric, and Shattered Crystal; should Sega live up to their recent apologies of the lackluster titles, the series is in good hands. I really can't describe my excitement for what could be the year that Sonic The Hedgehog is officially back.

Update: We finally have a name for Project Sonic 2017 as we were shown at the SXSW panel recently on March 16th (also Takashi Iizuka's birthday), with the official title being known as "Sonic Forces". The 40 second gameplay footage looks fantastic, with the return of the boosting, and surroundings being blown up by Eggman's robots, and could potentially look even better once the final product is released. We now have conformation that Sonic's friends showing up for this game namely Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Team Chaotix; Shadow and Metal Sonic could also possibly have appearances as well. As for the soundtrack, the main theme of the game sounds totally awesome. An instrumental demo composed by Tomoya Ohtani with a vocal version to be released later; and Jun Senoue confirmed to compose some songs in the game with Ohtani, with the information confirming vocal tracks in Sonic Forces that increases the chance of a much needed Crush 40 comeback. Furthermore, Sonic Mania has unveiled a new re-imagined zone known as Flying Battery Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The game is also being delayed until this coming summer to make sure it's as polished as it possibly can be. Both games are confirmed titles coming to Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch. I myself can't describe my excitement as it's been a while since I've been this stoked for any video game in quite a while. Looking forward to a great year for the blue blur hedgehog!
