So this is the first ever Sonic journal I've made in the 5 years I have been a member of deviantART. And I feel the time is now to finally share my thoughts about Sega's iconic mascot and one of my favorite childhood game characters. 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of everyone's favorite blue blur, Sonic The Hedgehog. 25 years going strong full of ups and downs, some great games, and some not so great ones. With many comic book issues, 5 cartoon TV series, a 1999 OVA, and a live-action CGI hybrid movie slated to release in 2018. But the upcoming year is what has peaked the interest of all Sonic fans alike (myself included). With two big games coming out the first one is Sonic Mania which is confirmed as a multiplatform sometime in the Spring 2017 release, going back to Sonic's 2D platforming roots in the Sega Genesis with Tails and Knuckles being playable characters; and being developed by Christian Whitehead who brought forth very awesome mobile phone and PS3/X360 ports of the Genesis classics and Sonic CD. Which is bringing a mix of stages we know, with new ones as well; along with new gameplay mechanics. And the next being an unnamed title at this time Sonic Project 2017 that's coming out for the Holiday season next year, this one being made by the same people who were behind Sonic Colors and Generations. Both games featuring the classic Genesis Sonic and looking phenomenal. The other interesting thing is Project 2017 has been confirmed that it's not a Sonic Adventure 3 or even a Generations 2, but something completely new. But I'm guessing by the tagline "Join the resistance." is indicating this game could possibly have ties to the popular Archie Sonic comic book series; so the "resistance" could refer to the Freedom Fighters from those comics. And by the looks of it you gotta wonder; has Dr.Eggman actually won and taken over this time? It does look pretty dark to say the least. There's much speculation of course for the Project 2017 game since very little was teased at the Comic Con anniversary party in July; but what's on my personal wish list is there's multiple playable characters like Sonic Heroes and '06 (I would love to play as Knuckles and Shadow again), Jun Senoue works on the soundtrack and Crush 40 comes back to do a main theme song again, either we get Ryan Drummond or Jason Griffith as the voice of modern Sonic back, and most importantly Sega and Sonic Team takes their time, and doesn't repeat the mistakes with Sonic '06 and Boom by rushing it. I honestly cannot explain my excitement level right now, as I'm going through all the games in my library, including the soon coming Sonic Boom Fire & Ice to hold me over for now. And after receiving mixed opinions with Sonic Lost World, coupled with the recent plummeting of Sonic's reputation with Boom Rise Of Lyric, and Shattered Crystal; should Sega live up to their recent apologies of the lackluster titles, the series is in good hands. I really can't describe my excitement for what could be the year that Sonic The Hedgehog is officially back.

Update: We finally have a name for Project Sonic 2017 as we were shown at the SXSW panel recently on March 16th (also Takashi Iizuka's birthday), with the official title being known as "Sonic Forces". The 40 second gameplay footage looks fantastic, with the return of the boosting, and surroundings being blown up by Eggman's robots, and could potentially look even better once the final product is released. We now have conformation that Sonic's friends showing up for this game namely Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Team Chaotix; Shadow and Metal Sonic could also possibly have appearances as well. As for the soundtrack, the main theme of the game sounds totally awesome. An instrumental demo composed by Tomoya Ohtani with a vocal version to be released later; and Jun Senoue confirmed to compose some songs in the game with Ohtani, with the information confirming vocal tracks in Sonic Forces that increases the chance of a much needed Crush 40 comeback. Furthermore, Sonic Mania has unveiled a new re-imagined zone known as Flying Battery Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The game is also being delayed until this coming summer to make sure it's as polished as it possibly can be. Both games are confirmed titles coming to Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch. I myself can't describe my excitement as it's been a while since I've been this stoked for any video game in quite a while. Looking forward to a great year for the blue blur hedgehog!
